Houston

Houston is one of the U.S.’s most populous cities. It ranks fourth in terms of population size with just over two million residents.  The metro area, which is made up of Sugar Land, Houston and Baytown, has just shy of six million residents.

The city of Houston was established in 1836. One year later, in 1837, it would become incorporated. It was named in honor of Sam Houston, a general who led troops at the Battle of San Jacinto. Houston would grow in leaps and bounds after oil was discovered there in 1901. The growth of the railroad and ports industries would draw people to the area as well.

Texas Medical Center and NASA’s Johnson Space Center is located in Houston. Texas Medical Center has more research and healthcare-related institutions than any other medical center in the United States. Most people have heard of NASA. It is where the nations’ space shuttle program is headquartered. Individuals interested in touring the facility, can.

Houston has been dubbed a global city. Its economy includes a variety of industries, amongst them, manufacturing, energy, transportation and aeronautics. Oil field equipment and health care are important industries as well. Though many people are unaware of this fact, Houston has as strong a financial district, as any other city in the country. More Fortune 500 companies have their headquarters in Houston than in any other city in the country besides New York City.

The Port of Houston is America’s highest ranking port in terms of total international waterborne tonnage handled. It ranks second in total cargo handled.

It also has a busy airport – George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), and plenty of Houston airport parking.

Houston is very diverse in terms ethnic identity. Many of the city’s residents are from the U.S. but a growing number of international immigrants are beginning to make a significant impact.

The city of Houston has a thriving art community. Each year, millions of people visit the city to check out the Museum District. The Theatre District is very active as well. Performances are year round. The Theatre District is located downtown and covers a 17 block area.

In addition to performance buildings, there are also plenty of great restaurants, places to play billiards, art house film venues and live bands. The Verizon Wireless Theatre regularly showcases live concerts, comedians and stage plays.

Houston has plenty of attractions, many of which are enjoyed by tourists and locals. Individuals interested in the nation’s space program may want to visit the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center. It has lots of interesting exhibits, including many interactive ones.

For those who like to shop, the famed Galleria is the perfect place to ‘shop until one drops’ It is the biggest mall in Texas. The Downtown Aquarium, Sam Houston Race Park, Old Market Square and SplashTown are all great places to visit as well. As one can see, Houston doesn’t lack in things to do.

For those who enjoy the outdoors, Houston has a tremendous number of parks, 337 in all. The city’s zoo and the Houston Museum of Natural Science are both located in Hermann Park.

Houston is a thriving city. Its large population, profitable industries and busy port, make it one of the most financially important cities in the United States. Culturally, the city is quite rich as well, with its arts and theatre districts playing a prominent role in the lives of many of its citizens.
